“Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man.”
-Swami Vivekananda.
I firmly believe that education is all about fostering a better connect with your true self and cultivating a distinctive flair and talent. For us, Education translates into a world beyond the prints of text books, where every individual is free to pioneer and innovate.
Going through many books I came across “What should we be teaching our future?” It is been observed in many areas of life, by teaching or by example we convey thoughts entirely to the contrary. For instance, in school they learn about passing exams not the usefulness of knowledge; about being part of a choir but not developing a distinctive voice; about being average in everything but not being exceptional in one; and about working on what they find hard and not honing what their unique gifts are!
The children have always been taught to eat what is served in the platter. Right from the childhood, the child observes mom and dad; at school the teachers, later friends, at work colleagues, but what about the real “ME”?
No one ever asks a question “Who am I?”; “What am I?”; “Who is real me?”
These questions astounded me and recollected what Albert Einstein said.
“Once you stop learning, you stop dying…..”
Ironically, children are fearless when they are born and all fear is learnt from adults! It is we who teach children to fear failure, to feel bad about them when they do not succeed which is practically neither possible nor feasible.
Neurologically, the fear of failure in children produces a series of negative and adverse thought patterns that eventually reduce our children’s strength and potentialities. Fear of failure ties down the child’s mind and make him or her mentally weak and tired. I think the so called “Soft Skills” are more important than most of what our children are taught.
Last but not least would like to conclude by quoting Bill Cosby,
“In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.”
